Uckfield Bowls Club - Competition Rules
(Revised October 2022)

1. Deadlines

Games should be played by the date shown for each round. In exceptional circumstances, a period of up to seven days may be granted beyond the deadline and that date will be FINAL (See section 3, Substitutes and Replacements).

2. Arrangements of Games

(a)   The first named side (the 'challenger’) must give the opponent three alternative and reasonable times and dates for playing the game within the time scale allowed. The dates should include a mixture of weekend and evening times. Where all players are available during the day it will be acceptable to offer daytime options.

(b)   The 'challenger’ must offer the three dates within 10 days of the advertised deadline for the previous round. Failure by the challenger to offer the dates within this term or if the opposition are unable to agree the dates offered, all efforts should be made to find a mutually agreeable date.

(c)   In the event that agreement cannot be reached amicably the Competition Secretary must be informed and will reserve the right to disqualify players.

(d)   Playing in external competitions will not be an excuse for not playing internal competitions within the scheduled time limits.

(e)   All singles games must have a marker to be arranged by the first named player (the 'challenger’).

3. Substitutes and Replacements

(a)   A substitute is a person who stands in for another player for one or more rounds within a competition. A replacement is a person who joins the team for the continuance of the competition.

(b)   If a replacement joins a team before the first round is played they will be regarded as an original starting player for their team and must pay the competition entry fee..

(c)   Each team may use only one substitute for each competition.

(d)  The substitute must not play for any other team in the same competition.

(e)   No substitute may play in the singles competitions.

(f)   Any substitute must be agreed by the Competition Secretary.

(g)   In the event that a member of a team is unable to play within the seven-day extended deadline, that person must be replaced by a substitute, or the match will be conceded.

(h)   No player should reach the final of a singles competition if they are aware in advance that they cannot play on the day of the final. The individual should withdraw from the competition immediately.

(i)   A player in a team can continue in the competition and one substitute be used at any time up to and including the final.

(j)   If a player in a team has an injury or has a doubt about playing in the final, the Competition Secretary must be alerted so that a substitute can be put on standby.

(k)  In the event that Finals Day is for whatever reason postponed and a substitute has been arranged, the original player in a team match has the option of returning to the team to play in the final on the re-scheduled date.

4. Choice of Rink

A draw shall be made from all the available rinks and played on the advertised settings. (The draw for outside competitions takes precedence).

5. Late Arrival for games

If a player fails to arrive for a match more than 15 minutes after the arranged time it is the right of the opponent(s) to claim the tie if they so wish.

6. Thursday Evenings

Thursday evenings are set aside for the Cameron-Waller Friendship Cup. The only exceptions are that County Competitions may be played and will take precedence.

7. Finals Day

(a)   All competitors should be aware of the pre-arranged date of Finals Day.

(b)   The date may be moved only if the green is unplayable or due to adverse weather conditions.

(c)   All competition finals will be held on this date. The only exception will be where a finalist is in more than three finals.

(d)   When a finalist is in more than three finals the following order of precedence will be used (where appropriate) to determine which competitions are played on Finals Day:

• Salmon Trophy
• Maybill Cup
• Mayors Cup
• Fred King Cup
• Ernie Hollick Cup
• Ralph Cup
• Doris Allen Cup
• Anniversary Cup
• John Ashby Cup

(e)  If for any reason a player in a singles or team final cannot play on Finals Day, they must inform the Competition Secretary as soon as possible and withdraw from the competition. If they are in a team final the Competition Secretary will attempt to find a suitable replacement.

(f)   All finalists and markers will be expected to wear ‘whites’ with Club shirts.

8. Miscellaneous

(a)   A score card should be kept for each game. It should be signed after the game by the singles marker or both skips in team games.

(b)   The scorecard should be placed in the scorecard box kept in the Clubhouse.

(c)   Any measurement dispute may be decided by an independent person in attendance at the green.

(d)   The winners should enter their name on the competition sheet.

(e)   A reduced number of ends may be played in matches with the prior agreement of both skips.

(f)   As soon as all the semi-finals have been played the Competition Organiser will prepare a finals day programme.

9. Prizes

(a)   Competition winners will hold the trophy for one year and will also receive a memento.

(b)   Competition runners-up will receive a memento.

(c)   Only those players who play in the final will be eligible to receive a prize. Players who have been substituted during the season and subsequently do not play in the final will not receive prizes.

10. Other matters

(a)   The Competition Organiser shall have absolute discretion in respect of the above rules and whose decision will be final.

(b)   In the absence of the Competition Organiser the Chairman and Captains shall be empowered to deputise.
